Hang Them Where There's No Outlet

Every other string light is tethered to a wall socket, which is why they end up wherever the plug is instead of wherever you wanted them. These run on AA batteries. The mirror, the headboard, the mantel, the inside of the front door — none of those have an outlet, and none of them need one.

• Drop in the batteries and hang them. A small battery box is the only hardware — no plug, no extension cord, no outlet to be near — so the lights go exactly where you pictured them — around a mirror, along a headboard, through a wreath on the back of the front door.
• Pick the length for the job. 4.9 ft with 10 snowflakes for a mirror or a mason jar, 9.8 ft with 20 for a mantel or a headboard, 19.7 ft with 40 for a tree or a full window — so you're not daisy-chaining three short sets to cover one run — the two shorter strings take 2 AA, the long one takes 3.
• Snowflake covers, not bare bulbs. Each LED sits inside a moulded snowflake that spreads the light through the shape — so you get a soft glow with a form to it — instead of the row of hard little dots a plain fairy string gives you.
• Bright enough to notice, dim enough to live with. Low-output LEDs under 60 lumens across the string — so they read as atmosphere rather than lighting — the level you actually want at 9pm beside a lamp, not something competing with the ceiling light.
• They stay cool to the touch. LED, not filament, drawing almost nothing off a couple of AAs — so you can weave them through a real garland, a fabric wreath, or a stack of pinecones — places you would never put a warm bulb.
• Five colours that either hide or take over. Warm white disappears into the decor and becomes the glow; multicolour becomes the decoration itself — so the same string works on a bookshelf in November and across the tree in December.
